The North Yorkshire Supported Housing Development Subsidy Scheme - 2026 - 2030

Purpose of the funding

The purpose of the Supported Housing Development Scheme (SHDS) is to incentivise the construction of new extra care and supported housing units within North Yorkshire and plug the viability gap.

This funding is designed to increase the number of extra care and supported living units available in North Yorkshire. The primary purpose is for residential units in which older adults live independently in self-contained apartments whilst also benefiting from on-site care and other communal facilities like restaurants and salons. As a local authority the Council is obliged to provide care to those who cannot otherwise afford it and qualify for assistance.

Extra Care is the name of a public funded model of supported living which is targeted at those:

• aged 55 or above (or younger if they have a disability); and

• have a housing, care or support need
