The York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership work together to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the county’s roads.
The York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership brings together the key agencies responsible for keeping our road users safe, healthy, and active as they travel across our county.
We are committed to working together, sharing resources and expertise to provide a co-ordinated, evidenced-led approach to prevent deaths and injuries on our roads.
Background
The Road Safety Partnership was formed in 2004.
The partnership includes North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council, National Highways, and the York and North Yorkshire Office for Policing, Fire, Crime and Commissioning (now part of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority).
Vision statement
The current partnership vision is:
By working ‘Towards Vision Zero’, we aim to reduce the number of those who are killed or seriously injured on our roads and improve the safety of all road users in York and North Yorkshire.
Partnership priorities and actions
The ‘Safe Systems’ approach is an international best practice to road safety management. It puts people at the centre, with the understanding that to prevent deaths and injuries, layers of protection are needed in the road system, through safe road users, vehicles and roads.
The Road Safety Partnership delivers a range of joint interventions driven by the 4E's of Education, Engagement, Engineering and Enforcement to improve the safety of road users, vehicles, roads and our post-crash response.
- Safer road users
Road users should try to operate within the boundaries set by the road system designers. - Safer vehicles
Vehicles that are designed well with the appropriate safety technologies can either prevent a crash or reduce or absorb some of the crash forces. - Safer roads
Roads and road features play a vital role in reducing crashes and/or the injury outcomes in the event of a crash. - Post-crash response
In the event of a crash, effective post-crash care, involving emergency treatment and trauma care and rehabilitation, can help reduce the risk of death and serious injuries.
Partnership actions
Education and engagement
Prevention and early intervention activities, increasing effective road safety education and engagement activities.
Engineering
Working with others to ensure the road infrastructure is fit for purpose and that signage is clear and visible.
