Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Prevention
Helping people live longer, healthier lives through prevention, early detection and timely support.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Preventing cardiovascular disease is an important priority in North Yorkshire because it affects healthy life expectancy, independence and quality of life.
Many of the factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease can be prevented, identified early or managed effectively. Partners across North Yorkshire are working together to improve prevention, identify risk earlier and help people access support before serious illness develops.
Our focus
Partners across North Yorkshire are working together to:
- Prevent cardiovascular disease through population health approaches.
- Improve early identification of people at increased risk.
- Support earlier diagnosis of related conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
- Increase access to prevention and outreach services within communities.
- Reduce inequalities and improve outcomes for populations at greatest risk.
NHS Health Checks
The NHS Health Check programme helps identify people at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease before symptoms develop.
Available to eligible adults aged 40 to 74, the programme provides an opportunity to assess key risk factors and access support that can improve long-term health outcomes.
Community blood pressure testing
Community blood pressure testing is increasingly available in a range of everyday settings across North Yorkshire, including libraries, pharmacies, workplaces, leisure centres and community venues.
These initiatives support the early identification of high blood pressure and help connect residents with wider prevention, wellbeing and lifestyle services.
