Moving North Yorkshire

Creating opportunities for everyone in North Yorkshire to move more, more often.

← Back to Live Well

Moving North Yorkshire is a shared ambition to make movement a natural, enjoyable and inclusive part of everyday life for everyone across the county. It recognises that being active is shaped not only by individual choices, but also by the places we live, work and learn, the services we use, and the opportunities available within our communities.

Partners from local government, health and care, education, transport, businesses, community organisations and local communities are working together to create the conditions that help people move more and sit less. By taking a whole-system approach, Moving North Yorkshire aims to support healthier lives, improve wellbeing, strengthen social connections and reduce inequalities.

Our approach

Moving North Yorkshire brings together action across three interconnected areas:

People

Supporting people of all ages and backgrounds to build confidence, develop positive habits and access opportunities to move in ways that work for them.

Place

Creating safe, accessible and welcoming spaces, streets and communities where movement becomes a natural part of everyday life.

Partnerships

Aligning leadership, resources and collective action across organisations, sectors and communities to create lasting change at scale.

Particular focus is being given to reducing the inequalities that prevent many people from being active, including people living in rural and coastal communities, disabled people, people with long-term health conditions and those who face barriers to participating in physical activity.

Our ambition

We want North Yorkshire to be a place where movement is part of everyday life. From walking to local shops and spending time outdoors, to active travel, recreation and sport, we want everyone to have opportunities to move in ways that work for them and experience the benefits for their health, wellbeing and quality of life.
