Update letter from the co-chairs of Selby and district Local Area Group - June 2021

Dear friends

This is a letter from Jane and Steve. We are the co-chairs of the Selby and district Local Area Group.

This letter is to help us stay in touch and to let you know what we have been doing.

Jodie from KeyRing has been working hard to keep in contact with self-advocates to make sure everyone is OK. She is always there to help if anyone needs any support.

We continue to enjoy our weekly online quizzes and there have been self-advocacy meetings. These are fun and help us keep in touch with everyone.

Self Advocates in Selby

Samuel has returned to the day service at Em People. It has been closed because of the pandemic. When Samuel arrives the staff take his temperature and everyone wears a mask. He has been busy recycling furniture. He is very pleased to be back and enjoys it very much.

Jane now has a tablet and she is now able to join meetings on line for the first time "I use my tablet for games and online meetings. I have liked seeing my friends online again, it helps me to feel connected to people. I know you can video call on it too and I would like to try video calling one day. I really enjoyed attending Karen Murrays leaving party online, the music was great and we listened to two goodbye songs for Karen. Having the tablet gave me a chance to say goodbye to her and it was nice to see Jamie Bannister again at the party who is living all the way over in Australia!"

Tom has been busy at Groundworks NY. Some days he does strimming and on other days, weeding, mowing the lawn or clearing areas of dead plants and trees. Tom enjoys being part of a team and being out about in the fresh air!

Coronavirus Vaccine

Lots of people have now had their second vaccine. This is will help keep everyone safe.

There is lots of useful information about the vaccine on the Keep Safe website https://www.keepsafe.org.uk/

If you do not have the internet, you can ask Jodie for information.

Karen retires

In May we said goodbye to Karen who has retired from her job as Self Advocacy manager at KeyRing. She has been a wonderful supporter of self-advocates and she will be missed by everyone. We wish her well.

Self Advocacy Celebration

Because of Coronavirus, we cannot have the celebration event we planned.  Self-Advocates decided to make a video and Henry and Samuel helped with it. The video reminds us about all that Self-advocates have achieved.

A podcast has also been made by self-advocates and you can listen to the different episodes by following this link:

Sadly, we do not know when we will be able to meet together again in 2021 but hopefully it won't be too long. We will listen to the Government and follow advice so that everyone can stay safe.

Take care and stay safe!
